Iceland’s F-roads offer intrepid travelers the opportunity to explore the country’s rugged and untamed landscapes, providing a thrilling and unforgettable adventure. These roads, primarily found in the Highland region, require a 4×4 vehicle due to their challenging terrain and river crossings. If you’re ready to embark on a journey of a lifetime, this comprehensive travel guide will equip you with all the essential information for driving on the F-roads in Iceland.

Know the F-Roads

F-roads are mountain roads that traverse Iceland’s Highland region, offering access to remote areas and extraordinary natural wonders. They are designated by an “F” followed by a number, such as F35 (Kjalvegur) or F26 (Sprengisandsleid). Familiarize yourself with the specific F-roads you plan to drive on and gather information about their conditions, river crossings, and any closures or restrictions. The road conditions can change rapidly due to weather and maintenance, so it’s crucial to check for updates before setting off.

Choose the Right Rental Car

Driving on F-roads requires a 4×4 vehicle due to the challenging terrain. It is important to rent a car that is caught out for Highland exploration, ensuring it has proper ground clearance, good suspension, and robust tires. All our 4×4 are permitted on the F-roads, but we do recommend renting a large SUV´s such as the Toyota Land Cruiser or Land Rover Discovery for traveling in the Highland.

Plan Your Itinerary

Plan your route and itinerary in advance, considering the attractions and destinations you wish to explore. Take note of the distances between F-roads, estimated driving times, and available accommodations or camping areas along the way. Keep in mind that driving on F-roads may be slower and more demanding than on paved roads, so plan your daily distances accordingly.

Pack Essential Gear

Before embarking on your F-road adventure, make sure you have the following essential gear:

Navigation: Use GPS navigation system to navigate the Highland region effectively. However, we also recommend having a detailed map in the car. Offline maps on your smartphone can also be useful.

Emergency Kit: All our cars have comprehensive emergency kit in the rental vehicle, including a first aid kit. As well as a spare tire or a tire repair kit and a jack. It is also a good idea to bring a flashlight and tow rope for cases of emergency.

Food and Water: There are no shops or gas stations along the F-roads. So, stock up on food and snacks and carry an ample supply of water, as services and amenities may be limited in the Highland region.

Camping Gear: If you plan to camp, bring a tent, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and other camping essentials.

Warm Clothing: Even in summer, the weather in Iceland can be unpredictable, so pack warm and waterproof clothing, sturdy boots, hats, and gloves.

Safety Precautions

Safety is our top priority and should also be yours when driving on F-roads. Keep the following tips in mind:

Drive cautiously and adhere to speed limits. The conditions can be challenging, and the roads may be narrow, steep, or gravelly.

We urge drivers to avoid crossing rivers at all cost, but if needed please cross rivers with caution. Assess the depth, current, and stability of the river crossings before proceeding. Our best advice is not cross rivers alone but rather to wait for another vehicle to cross before attempting it yourself.

Check the weather forecast regularly. Iceland’s weather is notorious for its rapid changes, so stay informed and be prepared for sudden shifts in conditions.

Respect the environment. Stay on designated tracks to minimize impact, and do not disturb the fragile vegetation and wildlife. Keep in mind that off road driving is illegal in Iceland and not covered by insurances.
